Melvindale-Northern Allen Park Public Schools is the second Downriver school district to start out the new school year without general education bus service due to a bus driver shortage.

On Aug. 26, Grosse Ile Township Schools announced that the sudden resignation of two bus drivers forced them to eliminate general education transportation.

On Sept. 2, Mel-NAP schools made a similar announcement.

Elfriede Hervey, director of Operations and Transportation for the school district, sent out a letter to families stating that due to the late resignations of four bus drivers, the district will not be able to offer general education transportation starting Sept. 7.

The district will still provide transportation for its out-of-district special education services, preschool and career-technical programs.

Hervey said that the Transportation Department had been utilizing a third-party vendor to assist with its transportation needs. The department was notified on Sept. 2 that its third-party vendor canceled the contract due to bus drivers resigning.

“Our hope is to secure services soon,” Hervey said. “We cannot give parents a date that transportation services will return to the district, however, I can assure you that it is top priority for the district and we will continue to work to find a solution.”

District officials assured parents and staff members that they will be kept informed of any developments.
