A school bus driver and an attendant were injured when the bus, which did not have any students on board, crashed into a fence around a golf course in Belleville on Thursday morning, officials said.

The driver was headed south on Franklin Avenue when the bus swerved off the road and slammed into a fence in the area of the 1st hole of Hendricks Field Golf Course, according to Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura.

The driver was unresponsive and might have suffered a medical episode before the 8:30 a.m. crash, according to the sheriff’s office. He was taken to Clara Maas Medical Center in Belleville to be treated. An update on his condition wasn’t immediately available.

The attendant, a man, was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.

The bus was on its way to pick up students.
