The service is in effect during the 2021-22 academic year, according to a press release.
WesPass, a pilot program, is funded through Wesleyan’s Finance Office, Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life, and Sustainability Office.
It is designed to create an affordable and accessible platform for students to increase their use of local transit while reducing the university’s contribution to Connecticut state greenhouse gas emissions, recognizing that single-occupancy vehicles accounted for 38 percent of the state’s total emissions in 2017, according to the news release.
“WesPass presents students with a simple and convenient alternative to driving personal vehicles or using ridesharing services. We’re excited to collaborate with Middletown Area Transit on this program,” Wesleyan Sustainability Director Jen Kleindienst said in a prepared statement.
Buses connect distant parts of Middletown, bringing students access to grocery, shopping, and medical destinations, according to the university.
MAT buses also connect to recreational and shopping opportunities in neighboring towns, and to the train station in Meriden with connections to New Haven, Hartford, Bradley Airport, and beyond. 9-Town Transit buses connect Middletown to Connecticut’s Shoreline and can be picked up at the same downtown bus terminal.
