While it is cold, police are warning about leaving your keys in your car to warm it up
WINONA, Minn(WKBT) – Police are taking note of the string of car thefts in Winona.
While it is cold, police are warning about leaving your keys in your car to warm it up.
According to officers, some cars are taken from convenience stores as well as in front of some people’s homes.
Car thefts like these are often crimes of opportunity.
“With all the foot traffic, not a lot people realize the fact that, ‘that vehicle belongs to a certain person, they’re only gonna be inside for a minute or two minutes… and what can happen in that period of time’… they could lose their vehicle,” said Winona Police Chief Tom Williams.
Officers in La Crosse have also seen an increase in car thefts.
They are asking people not to leave their keys in their car and to use a remote start if possible.
