Balfour celebrates Father’s Day with classic car ‘cruise-in’ - Boulder Daily Camera

Residents and families at Balfour Senior Living’s Louisville campus celebrated Father’s Day — and the easing of coronavirus restrictions after a long year of isolation — on Sunday with a car show, live music and food.

Last year, with strict restrictions in place, the senior living community organized a drive-by car parade for Father’s Day, with residents distanced and masked outside and limited participation from family members. This year, Balfour kept the car theme, with streets around the campus lined with both classic and modern cars for a “cruise-in” show that also was open to the community.

“Cars are a huge hit with our residents,” said Louise Garrels, Balfour’s communications director.

Last year’s drive-by car parade was the brainchild of Balfour life enrichment director Nikole Bari and resident Bill Reichenberg, a longtime car enthusiast. Sunday, Reichenberg, with the help of his son, brought two of his cars, a 1957 red-and-white Chevy Bel Air and a black 1951 Ford sedan.

“The ’57 was always my favorite,” Reichenberg said.

While he liked the car show, Reichenberg said, he prefers driving or riding in classic cars to looking at them — and he snuck in a ride Sunday morning. He became a car collector in the 1990s after retiring, showing cars around the country. A longtime member of the Good Guys Rod & Custom Association, his passion is cars from the 1950s.

“This wonderful hobby is expensive, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Sunday’s event felt like a street fair, with grilled hamburgers and hot dogs dished up for lunch and Kona Ice and Sweet Cow providing dessert. Dads also could pick up root beer, cream soda or brownies. The Denver Dolls, a vintage tribute group, and the YoungHeart Band provided entertainment.

Sisters Christina Trigg and Connie Whitmore met their dad, Hank Espinsoa, a Balfour memory care resident, for the event. They said he wasn’t excited about attending, until he learned about the car show.

“When they mentioned classic cars, he was was ready to go,” Trigg said, adding he refurbished classic cars as a hobby.

David Craver said checking out classic cars was a good way to spend Father’s Day. He previously restored a rusty 1968 Camaro “from the ground up.”

“I’ve been into cars since I was a kid,” he said. “I started with Hot Wheels.”

In acknowledgment of the many Balfour residents with dogs, there also was a dog photo booth at the event, with homemade dog biscuits available to reward good canine behavior.

Balfour resident George Williams posed for photos with his daughter, Carol Jaffe, granddaughter, Sarah Jaffe, and dog, Willy Wonka. After the car show, they planned to go out to dinner and play games at home.

“We’re so happy,” Carol Jaffe said. “We’re happy to be out and about.”
