Car insurance for a GMC - Bankrate.com

rintihoh.blogspot.com

In almost every state in the U.S., car insurance is required for all registered vehicles. Car insurance protects you financially if you are in an accident and provides a means to pay for the other driver’s accident costs if you are at fault. The average cost of full coverage car insurance in the U.S. is $1,674 a year, or $139.50 a month.

The cost of car insurance, however, can vary greatly. If you go with your state’s minimum liability coverage, for example, your premiums will be lower. Adding on coverage options like collision and comprehensive add dollars to your premium, but also include coverages that may save you money in the long run. Other factors include the make, model and age of your car — an expensive sports car, for example, may cost more to insure than a family sedan.

Models included in this review:

  • GMC Acadia
  • GMC Sierra
  • GMC Terrain
  • GMC Yukon

How much does it cost to insure a GMC?

One of the most important factors in determining insurance premiums is your vehicle’s make and model. This will help impact whether your own premium rate is above or below the national average of $1,674. Each insurer uses its own method for determining premiums, so you could ask for quotes on the same GMC car from two different insurers and receive two different costs. This is one reason you should review your insurance policy every year, since it may benefit you to switch to another company.

A few of the factors that insurers use to determine premiums include the following:

  • Crash rate stats per make/model: Both the government and private entities collect crash rate statistics and do crash testing. What they find can impact your premium. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), for example, rates the GMC Sierra’s headlights as “poor.” An insurer will assess this information to determine if it leads to increased accidents — which may cause it to increase premium rates.
  • Price of parts: GMC cars are often made in America, using American-made parts. This means parts may be cheaper and easier to access than a car that features, say, German-made parts. Your insurer will take that into account and may pass the savings of comparatively inexpensive repairs on to you in the form of cheaper premiums.
  • Safety features: Most insurers like safe cars because they lead to fewer accidents and a reduced likelihood of claims. Insurers tend to look favorably, for example, at features like the GMC Acadia’s automatic emergency braking and rear park assist when determining premiums.

Car insurance for a GMC: by model

Auto insurance for GMC vehicles varies based on numerous factors. With that in mind, it may be good to start with a general idea of average annual premiums when you begin your search for the best car insurance for you.

Car insurance for GMC Acadia

The 2021 GMC Acadia starts at $33,900, and is a mid-sized SUV that seats up to seven and comes with either four-cylinder or V-6 power. The Acadia features GMC’s advanced technology and safety features, including something the company calls Intellibeam, which turns on your car’s high beams according to traffic conditions. There is also front pedestrian braking to help you avoid collisions with pedestrians — which might otherwise result in high-end insurance claims.

Car insurance for GMC Sierra

GMC features a whole line of Sierra trucks, including the Sierra 1500, which retails for $30,100, up to the Sierra 3500 HD AT4, which starts at $60,300. The vehicles are embedded with safety technology, including up to 15 camera views and an optimized trailering system that leads to fewer possible injuries and a better trailering experience. An in-vehicle trailering app is just one way the Sierra works to keep you safe. Full coverage for the trucks averages $1,519 per year, which may be due to the higher-end vehicles that form the upper end of the Sierra series.

Car insurance for GMC Terrain

The Terrain series includes two vehicles: the basic Terrain, which starts at $28,500, and the Terrain Denali, starting at $35,900. The Terrain is a small SUV with GMC Pro Safety installed standard. This feature makes you aware of potential hazards and helps you avoid objects behind you when you park or reverse. The IIHS rates the GMC Terrain as good (the top ranking) in every area except headlights, which, like the Sierra, earned a poor rating.

Car insurance for GMC Yukon

The Yukon series is GMC’s largest SUV, and its most expensive — putting it close to the luxury car category. The standard Yukon retails for $51,000. At the top of the range, the Yukon XL Denali starts at $71,300. The increased cost plays into higher auto insurance premiums on average, especially for full coverage. However, The Yukon features safety technology designed to reduce your chance of accidents. Like the Terrain, it has GMC’s Pro Safety Plus features, including auto high beams and following distance indicator.

As the table below shows, it pays to get multiple quotes from a range of insurers when you are looking for car insurance for GMC vehicles. In general, Amica’s rates are low across different GMC models, as are USAA’s. At the other end of the scale, State Farm is at the high end. However, this does not mean you should avoid State Farm — or any other carrier — based on average rates. GMC features that impact insurance costs

  • Rear park assist: some GMC models have a feature that signals if you are getting close to another vehicle or object when reverse parking. This can lower the possibility of fender-benders when backing into a parking space and reduce insurable risk.
  • Intellibeam auto high beams: this GMC-developed feature will automatically switch on your high beams when traffic allows, giving you better night vision and making the road safer for both you and oncoming traffic.
  • Front pedestrian braking: most GMC models have multiple cameras that can detect pedestrians who might step onto the road suddenly between parked cars. Many GMC vehicles can even provide automatic emergency braking in these situations, making costly vehicle and pedestrian accidents less likely. This could make car insurance for GMC cost less than vehicles without this feature.
  • Lane keep assist: GMC vehicles can alert you if you unintentionally drift out of your lane. The vehicles’ cameras (as many as 15) monitor the road. They notify you of the distance between you and the car ahead of you, displaying the distance gap as seconds. Both help you avoid accidents when driving, reducing the likelihood of accident claims and, potentially, your insurance rates.

Other car insurance coverage for a GMC

Your minimum liability coverage is designed primarily to protect the other driver in an accident where you are at fault. So how do you protect yourself and your investment in your vehicle? There are several ways.

First, consider adding collision and comprehensive to your policy. Collision will help pay for damages to your own car following an accident, while comprehensive pays for damages from anything other than an accident, such as a tree hitting your car or a fire. Both are considered part of a full coverage policy.

You may get help paying for injuries in an at-fault accident if you have personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments (medpay) coverage. In no-fault states, PIP coverage may be mandatory. Your insurer will likely also have other optional coverages, such as roadside assistance coverage, rideshare coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Methodology

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze 2021 rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quoted rates are based on a 40-year-old male and female driver with a clean driving record, good credit and the following full coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverages that meet each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2019 GMC of the following model types, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually:

  • GMC Acadia
  • GMC Sierra
  • GMC Terrain
  • GMC Yukon

These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.
