Growth in China's car sales slowed in May as a global chip shortage delayed car deliveries and the world's largest auto market entered the slack season.
Sales of passenger cars hit 1.62 million vehicles last month, up 1% from a year earlier, the China Passenger Car Association said Tuesday. April sales grew 12% from a year ago, when the market was still struggling under the pandemic.
Sales of electric cars in May surged 177% to 185,000 vehicles from a year earlier, the association said, continuing to outpace the overall car market, as more consumers are willing to own electric cars.
Last month, Tesla Inc. sold 21,936 made-in-Shanghai vehicles in China while exporting 11,527 cars overseas, the association's data showed. In April, the association reported that Tesla had sold 11,671 cars in China, down from 35,478 the month before.
