Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) will return to regular bus service on June 13, 2021, and return to collecting fares on July 1, 2021.
In the spring of 2020, at the outset of the COVID-19 emergency, WTA reduced bus service by approximately 30 percent. This was in response to decreased ridership demand as well as uncertainty regarding the availability of staff and other resources. Requests for pre-COVID levels of service have been rising and increased demand is expected to continue through the late summer and the fall. In addition, WTA is now confident in its ability to predict the availability of staff and other resources.
In the Spring of 2020, WTA also temporarily suspended fare collection to increase physical distance between transit riders and Bus Drivers. WTA’s readiness to resume fare collection is based on the ongoing federal mask-wearing requirement on public transportation, the installation of clear protective barriers in all WTA buses, a high percentage of Bus Drivers being vaccinated, and rising levels of vaccination among community members.
Throughout the past 14 months, WTA has continued to transport people to reach jobs, grocery stores and pharmacies, and medical services.
