A global shortage of microchips has forced automakers to get creative. Most have slowed or paused production lines building some cars. Others have continued to produce cars but removed some functions from the ones they do build to stretch their limited supply of microprocessors. Car shoppers will soon find that BMW has joined the latter group, removing touchscreen functions from some models.
The cars still have display screens, and drivers can still use them to control every function they would ordinarily control. But they’ll have to do it through the hockey-puck-shaped BMW iDrive dial on the center console. The affected vehicles are also equipped with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which allow drivers to access many of the same functions through voice commands.
BMW expects to begin shipping models without the touchscreen functionality to dealerships soon.
Affected models include:
“The global chip shortage is ongoing and impacting automakers worldwide. We are actively managing the situation and are in close contact with our suppliers,” a BMW spokesperson told reporters.
Dealers will discount the price by $500 for buyers who take delivery of a BMW without touchscreen functionality.
Cars equipped with the Parking Assistant Package will also lose the Backup Assistant feature. It allows drivers to save short reverse sequences they use frequently – such as backing out of a garage at home – and have the car repeat them autonomously.
BMW has not set a schedule for when these functions will return. Some analysts now expect the chip shortage to affect car production through the end of 2022.
