Following a national trend precipitated by COVID-19, Greenville County Schools is short on bus drivers, leaving buses to arrive just on-time at some campuses and up to an hour late at others.
Adam James, transportation director at GCS, said the district has always been recruiting, but now they need drivers more than ever.
According to James, there are 370 bus routes in Greenville County. Ideally, they’d need about 370 drivers to cover those routes, along with 24 floaters — full-time drivers that take any route that needs to be covered. They have a bank of about 30 substitute drivers that cover routes when they run out of floaters.
“We max out our subs every day,” James said.
The district is looking for anyone who’s at least 18, has been driving for at least a year, can pass a drug test and a physical and doesn’t have more than four points on their license.
“We’ll take them and make them bus drivers,” James said.
The district covers all the training and many of the fees; prospective drivers will have to pay some of the DMV fees associated with the CDL.
In addition, the district is looking to fill a number of bus aide positions. Aides help exclusively with special needs students, and they assist with whatever mobility needs a student may have. They get a bit of basic medical training, but mostly get straight to work.
The district guarantees a minimum of 30 hours for any full-time driver, making them eligible for benefits, including health and dental insurance, along with free life insurance, and more. Drivers looking for more hours can drive for extra-curricular activities like field trips during the day.
GCS is also looking for a number of custodial and food service workers.

- Bus aide $12.93 – $16.07
- Custodian $12.93 – $15.04
- Food service $12.93 – $15.04
