A Cullman County boy died Sunday after he was reportedly found in a hot car outside his family’s Holly Pond home.
Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick identified the boy as Johnathan Milam, known as “LJ.” He was 3.
Kilpatrick confirmed he responded to Cullman Regional Medical Center Sunday afternoon and was told the boy had been found unresponsive inside a vehicle. The boy died at the hospital.
Cullman County sheriff’s officials declined to release any additional details, including the time and place of the incident.
Sheriff Matt Gentry released this statement to AL.com Wednesday: “There was an incident involving a small child on Sunday, August 22nd, 2021. It appears to be a tragic accident but it’s still under investigation.”
A GoFundMe has been launched for LJ’s family. The organizer called him “a sweet little boy.” He is survived by his parents and older sister.
“We are asking for donations for the family at this time to help with food, gas, and any financial burdens to come their way,’’ the GoFundMe reads. “We appreciate any and all prayers at this time and the days coming.”
LJ appears to be the 16th child die in a hot car nationally this year, according to KidsandCars.org, and the first in Alabama for 2021.
Twenty-six children died in hot cars nationwide in 2020, including three in Alabama.
Siblings Daniel Garcia, 3, and Ivan Salazar Jr, 1., died of pediatric vehicular heatstroke on Saturday, Aug 15, 2020, when authorities say they climbed into a vehicle sometime after 1 p.m. and were discovered about 3:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020, 3-year-old Bentley Fowler was declared dead in a car on Church Street in the northwest Alabama town of Hodges. In that case, the boy’s parents, Dakota Heath Fowler, 20, and Brandi Michelle Burks, 22, were arrested on manslaughter charges, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Experts say vehicles heat up fast, and the inside of a car can reach dangerous temperatures in a matter of minutes. On a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can approach 110 degrees in just 10 minutes. After half an hour, it can be well above 120. But that’s just the temperature of the air in shaded areas of the car.
