PHILIPPI — A COVID-19 outbreak within the Barbour County Schools’ transportation department will affect the routes of almost half the county’s school buses this week, officials said.
Barbour County Schools started the 2021-22 school year on Aug. 18.
Barbour County Superintendent of Schools Jeff Woofter sent out automated calls and social media posts on both Saturday and Sunday to alert parents to the situation.
“We have had an outbreak in our transportation department that will impact nearly half of our bus runs this coming week,” Woofter said Saturday. “We are going to ask those parents, who are able to do so, to take their children to school that are on the routes that are being canceled or to make arrangements with other family or friends that can take their children to school if possible.
“For those unable to arrange for alternate transportation, the absences of their children will be excused. The children on the buses do not need to quarantine due to the fact that drivers and students were masked and they were not within 3 feet for 15 minutes or more,” he said. “Our teachers will prepare make-up work packs for those students unable to attend due to a lack of transportation.”
On Sunday, Woofter said the county’s transportation supervisor, Valerie Cross, had been working with bus operators to get transfers and some partial routes covered.
He also noted on Saturday that “We have also been informed that some families have a sick family member with COVID symptoms, that aren’t getting tested so that their children can still attend school. I appreciate those people who want their children in school, but please be considerate of the students and staff that can be negatively impacted by that type of behavior.”
Woofter posted the following bus schedule information Sunday evening:

On Saturday, Woofter stated, “As you know, we are doing everything we can to see that our schools remain open and are serving our students in the most effective way of getting a quality education. We believe that to be face-to-face instruction.
“Last year, when the COVID-19 infection rates rose we closed the entire district and went to district-wide remote learning,” he said.” This year we are going on a more focused approach and will close individual classrooms, grade levels in individual schools, or an entire school if necessary due to staff shortages related (to) infection outbreaks.”
