Merrill - The Merrill Transit System celebrated the 100th anniversary of the city's transit system on Saturday. Residents gathered to take part in the nickel tour, which is how much a ride cost on the system back in 1921.

Brad Burmmond, the transit director for Merrill-Go-Round, says 100 years of service is quite an accomplishment. Tom Burg, a railroad historian from the Merrill area, said that part of what makes Merrill the city it is today is the transit system. 

"The entire city developed around the streetcar line, so when the significant city buildings were built--like the courthouse, the post office, the high school, the library--they were all built on the streetcar line," said Burg. 

The anniversary brings to mind memories and stories of triumph for the system. "We've overcome a lot of things throughout the years--even going back to the trolley days where trolleys burned in the bus barn and fell off the tracks into the rivers, so we've overcome a lot and are looking forward to continuing to serve Merrill," Brummond said. 

Brummond and Burg say the celebration exemplifies what makes Merrill special. "This is a very unique situation in a small town like this to have such a good public transit system. For the Historical Society it allows us to be involved in current events and in historical events," said Burg.

"There's a lot more to do in Merrill than what just appears, so you can do some research and find out what else is available in Merrill," Brummond said. "There's a lot to do here."
