Merrill - The Merrill Transit System celebrated an anniversary of motor buses providing transportation needs to city residents for 100 years, Saturday. Residents gathered to take part in the nickel tour, which is how much a ride cost on the system back in 1921.
Transit Director for Merrill-Go-Round, Brad Brummond says 100 is quite an accomplishment. Along with Tom Burg, a railroad historian from the Merrill area remarked that part of what makes Merrill the city it is today was the transit system. "The entire city developed around the street car line so when the significant city buildings were built like the court house, the post office, the high school, the library they were all built on the street car line," said Burg.
The anniversary of motor buses being the mode of transportation brings to mind memories and stories of triumph for the system. Transit Director Brummond said, "we've overcome a lot of things throughout the years even going back to the trolley days where trolleys burned in the bus barn and feel off the tracks into the rivers so, we've overcome a lot and looking forward to continuing to serve Merrill."
They say the celebration exemplifies what makes Merrill special. "This is a very unique situation in a small town like this to have such a good public transit system. For the historical society it allows us to be involved in current events and in historical events," said Burg. Brummond continued, "there's a lot more to do in Merrill than what just appears so you can do some research and find out what else is available in Merrill, there's a lot to do here," said Brummond.
