A crash involving a school bus on a highway near Forest Grove left seven people injured Friday morning, officials said.
Firefighters from Forest Grove responded to reports of the crash on Oregon 6 just before 9:30 a.m., according to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue.
The first crew to arrive found the bus straddling both lanes of the road, with its front end into an embankment and visible damage to its rear axle.
Oregon State Police said a Ford F550 was traveling west on Highway 6 near milepost 35 when its unloaded flatbed trailer began to fishtail and broke away from its coupling.
The detached trailer collided with the driver-side rear axle of the school bus with students on a field trip to Portland, police said.
The bus carried six adults and 31 students, police said. Most were high schoolers from the Nestucca School District.
The bus began to rotate and went into the eastbound ditch, coming to rest against the embankment and blocking both lanes of the highway, police said.
Seven people were taken by medics to various hospitals with minor injures and as a precaution, police said.
The truck’s driver, Frank Rich, 64, of Otis, didn’t have the correct coupling for the trailer and was cited for operating an unsafe vehicle, police said.
The highway was closed for about two hours, with one lane opening about 11:30 a.m. About 12:45 p.m., officials said the road had fully reopened.
