A car crashed into a bus in northeast Denver on Wednesday afternoon and two people who were in the car fled the crash scene on foot. A man in the car was held by police.

The Denver Fire Department responded and checked bus passengers for injuries.

Capt. Greg Pixley, a fire department spokesman, said there were 13 people on the private school bus. One child was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries.

The incident started with a minor collision between two cars near East 39th Avenue and Peoria Street, said Jay Casillas, a police spokesman. The victim driver in that collision attempted to contact the other driver and a passenger in the suspect car, a gray Mazda sedan, pointed a gun at the victim driver.

The suspect driver fled, and the victim driver followed the Mazda, Casillas said. A short time later, at about 3:25 p.m., the driver of the Mazda ran a stop sign at the intersection of East 28th Avenue and Havana Street and collided with the bus.

Police believe the man taken into custody at the bus crash scene is the passenger suspect who brandished the gun, Casillas said.

The Mazda wound up on a front lawn in the residential neighborhood and the bus rolled onto its side. On Wednesday night, police continued to look for the driver and passenger who fled the crash.
