Longmont City Council on Tuesday is to consider paying a $152,508 local government subsidy to continue getting the FLEX Northern Colorado regional bus service that connects Fort Collins, Loveland, Berthoud, Longmont and Boulder.
Since 2009, the city of Fort Collins — the operator of the FLEX bus service between Fort Collins and Boulder — has built a coalition of jurisdictions with stops along the FLEX line, helping pay a share of the operational costs of this popular bus service, Longmont Transportation Planning Manager Phil Greenwald wrote in a memo to council for Tuesday’s 7 p.m. meeting.
“The city of Longmont has been part of this Intergovernmental Agreement since the beginning of the FLEX and remains a proud partner of this transit service,” Greenwald said.
For this year, Fort Collins has lowered the previously agreed upon $169,263, based on service suspensions in early 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Greenwald wrote.
He said Longmont’s city staff is recommending that council approving the resolution authorizing the mayor to sign the intergovernmental agreement with the city of Fort Collins. Of the total $152,508 Longmont contribution, $45,000 would come from the 2021 city budget ‘s general fund and $107,508 from the budget’s street fund, amounts already included and approved in the overall budget council has adopted for this year.
FLEX service between Fort Collins and Longmont was launched in June 2010 and expanded from Longmont to points in Boulder in January 2016.
Sites for FLEX passengers to transfer to the Regional Transportation District bus system are available in Longmont and Boulder, although those passengers have to pay fares or use passes to board the RTD buses.
