A man who authorities say stole a Corona police car Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, was arrested after he fled into a Riverside apartment complex.
The theft happened after a traffic collision at about 2 p.m. on the westbound 91 Freeway near Van Buren Boulevard, said Officer Ryan Railsback, a Riverside Police Department spokesman. It was unclear whether the unmarked, black police SUV was involved in the collision.
Shots were exchanged as the suspect gained control of the police car and drove away, leaving his crumpled car behind on the freeway. No one was injured by the gunfire, Railsback said.
Police tracked the man to an apartment complex at the intersection of La Sierra and Minnier avenues, where he barricaded himself before being arrested.
The man’s name was not publicly announced. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
Next door to the apartment complex, the stolen police SUV sat in the parking lot of a strip mall, surrounded by crime scene tape. The back window and one side window were smashed open.
The incident prompted the California Highway Patrol to shut down all lanes of the westbound freeway, leaving motorists stuck behind a swarm of police cars. Some stood outside their cars and watched the investigation.
The CHP said at 5 p.m. that it didn’t know when the lanes would reopen. Some motorists were turning around on their own and leaving the freeway, the CHP said.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office was taking the lead on the police shooting investigation.
