BILLERICA — A 14-year-old girl suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries when she was struck by a car on Cook Street, near the intersection of Valerie Avenue, on Saturday afternoon.

An investigation into the incident suggests the teen may have failed to look both ways for traffic before attempting to cross the road, according to Billerica Police Chief Roy Frost.

“The girl was on the side of the road, and perhaps, just at the last second, decided she wanted to cross,” Frost said.

The teen was transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington for treatment.

“It was a significant impact, and obviously we’re hoping for the best for this young girl,” Frost said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. An investigation — which included witness statements and a statement from the driver — suggests the vehicle’s impact with the girl caused the youth to go over the top of the vehicle, before she landed back down on the road.

Frost pointed out statements also established the driver was traveling around 30 mph at the time of the impact, which would be within the speed limit in the area.

The teen’s injuries were considered serious, but not life-threatening, shortly after the incident occurred. Frost said he was unable to update her condition on Sunday.

“Ultimately at the scene, all we are able to do is visually assess, so we don’t know what her situation is at the hospital,” Frost said. “But we believe it could be lower extremity trauma, as well as potential head trauma from the distance she went when she was struck, and based on the speed of the impact.

“This wasn’t a bump, this was a real accident,” he added.

Based on the information gathered by police at the scene, there will be no charges or citations brought against the driver.

“There’s no reason to believe this was anything other than an accident right now,” Frost said.

As emergency crews were addressing the accident on Cook Street, Frost pointed out firefighters were battling a house fire on Christina Avenue, less than a mile away. No injuries were reported at the scene of the fire, as everyone was out of the home prior to the arrival of firefighters.
