TAMPA — A car was submerged in a pond with its driver still inside Wednesday night near the intersection of Whispering Brook Drive and Clover Pine Drive, according to Tampa Police.
The car submerged around 8:45 p.m. after it left the roadway for an unknown reason, struck “some trees” and overturned as it entered the pond, police said. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
A passenger in the vehicle was able to escape. A rescue attempt by first responders to save the driver was unsuccessful, according to police.
The car remained submerged as of 9 p.m. Wednesday. Police say they’ll have to remove the vehicle from the water in order to remove the driver.
Police did not identify the duo involved in the crash but said the driver was a woman. A report from WFTS ABC Action News said the crash involved a 38-year-old mother, who remains trapped, and her 12-year-old son, who escaped the crash.
A call to Tampa Police to confirm the identities of those involved was not answered Wednesday night.
