A San Bernardino man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after his car ran out of gas on the Cajon Pass and was then struck by a motorcyclist, who died in the crash over the weekend, authorities said Monday, April 26.

The crash happened at about 4:12 a.m. Sunday, April 25, near Hesperia on the northbound lanes of the 15 Freeway, south of Oak Hill Road, California Highway Patrol officials said in a news release. A black 2005 Ford Mustang driven by a 36-year-old man ran out of fuel and came to a stop in the far left lane, police said. A 1996 Honda 900RR traveling through thick fog then slammed into the left side of the car.

The motorcyclist died at the scene of the collision, police said. He was later identified as Alex Zwingmann, 26, of Apple Valley, by San Bernardino County Coroner’s officials.

The San Bernardino man was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to inmate records. He was cited, then released from custody Sunday afternoon.

The crash remained under investigation Monday. Further information was not immediately released.
