State police are continuing to investigate the discovery of a car connected to the disappearance of a City of Poughkeepsie man 12 years ago.

But police on Monday morning had not confirmed the remains found inside the car are those of the man, or any evidence suggesting foul play.

Trooper A.J. Hicks, Troop K spokesperson, said investigators were searching inside the 2001 blue Hyundai Accent removed from the Hudson River on Thursday. It was the car Rohan Stefon Brown was driving in 2008 before he disappeared.

"To my knowledge, they have not found anything criminal at this time," Hicks said. "But they are still going through the car."

The car was discovered Wednesday by state police divers during sonar training on the Hudson River, near Waryas Park in the City of Poughkeepsie. The submerged vehicle was found 75 feet from shore and hauled from the river on Thursday.

After the vehicle was moved to a secure location, the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office and Troop K Forensic Investigation Unit discovered the human remains inside.

"The investigation is still ongoing," Hicks said. "And there is no positive ID from the medical examiner's office.

Brown's car was last seen Dec. 16, 2008, according to Journal archives. A SUNY Albany campus police officer had cited the vehicle for a violation. But it was unclear if Brown was in the vehicle at the time. And the investigation was delayed due to the university police department's computers crashing.

Grace Skinner, Brown's mother, told the Journal in 2009 that her son didn't have much money on him at the time of his disappearance, and his clothes were still at home.

"He left as if he was going out for the night, and he was coming back," Skinner said. "He left without his driver's license, his diploma. If he left to start a new life, he would have taken those things.

Brown was acting strangely in the days leading up to his disappearance, she said.

"He was scared of something, and a couple of his friends said some people were after him and wanted to hurt him," Skinner said. "He didn't tell me who it was. I remember asking him about school one time and he said, 'You're talking about school over my life.'"
