BAY CITY, MI - Local public transportation system Bay Metro Transit get its buses back on the road.
Bay Metro Transit had previously suspended all fixed bus routes after an announcement on March 23 due to COVID-19 concerns while DART services were running for essential services only.
Bay Metro announced that it is implementing an initial re-engagement plan, which went into effect on Monday, July 27. As a part of the plan, riders are now able to travel on buses on most fixed routes. However, Bay Metro is requiring passengers to take safety precautions due to the ongoing pandemic such as wearing masks to board vehicles and practicing social distancing onboard.
“Passenger cooperation with our efforts to get the service operational and keep the risk of exposure as low as possible will be extremely important,” read a statement from Bay Metro. “Any positive test for COVID-19 amongst Bay Metro Transit employee associated with the provision of service will result in service interruptions, potentially for weeks at a time.”
Not all routes will be up and running, with Routes 1 and 4 being still closed.
Routes will also be departing every 1 hour and 15 minutes instead of the typical 1 hour departure time frame, according to Bay Metro. This extra 15 minute time frame is to allow staff to disinfect the buses between each trip.
No fixed routes will be run on Saturdays, but Bay Metro stated that rides will still be available through the DART service, with priority scheduling for essential trips such as dialysis, medical shopping and work needs receiving priority for scheduling.
According to Bay Metro, DART will be offered Monday and Friday for seniors and individuals with disabilities. ADA-certified individuals will have priority regardless of trip purpose, with Bay Metro stating that essential trips will receive secondary consideration. All other trips will be based on space availability.
Capacity for all Bay Metro vehicles has also been greatly reduced to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. According to Bay Metro, fixed route buses are limited to 10 passengers and DART vans are limited to 2.
Because of this capacity restriction, Bay Metro stated that passengers may be passed by if the vehicle is at capacity but that they will work on getting another ride out to the passenger.
“We will get transportation out to those that are passed by as soon as possible,” read a statement from the organization.
The Bay Metro Central Bus Station at 1124 Washington Ave. is now back open for patrons to utilize the restroom but the facility has a limited capacity of 10 people. Masks and face coverings are also required to enter the facility.
