One Turlock business owner has found an engaging way to give back to the community while helping support other small businesses through pop-up shops with a purpose.
In just a couple of weeks, XX Functional Fitness is joining forces with Westside Ministries to raise funds for the nonprofit organization while providing shopping and entertainment for attendees through XXHOP — a pop-up shop featuring over 60 vendors, artists and music.
By utilizing their own parking lot and those of their neighbors in Freitas Park, the pop-up shop will also coincide with a car show and performances by the Center for Urban Performance and Service dancers. When all is said and done, XX Functional Fitness will donate 25% of its vendor fees to Westside Ministries.
“We want to donate that to help the community and help Turlock out. If it can help make being on the westside even 1% better, it’s worth it,” Schmitt said. “I know they do a lot of good work that benefits everybody.”
Schmitt has made it a point to operate a charitable business since he bought the gym over a year ago.
When XX Functional Fitness hosted its first vendor fair, the XX Holiday Shoppe, in December, it served as a way for the community to shop small for Christmas during a time when many entrepreneurs are struggling to make ends meet during the coronavirus pandemic. The gym’s owner Alec Schmitt didn’t stop there, however; XX Functional Fitness also collected toys for Westside Ministries during the event, ending the day with a giant pile of toys which would be given to children in need of a Christmas present.
As a gym that caters to all sorts of clients, from working moms and high school students to Jiu Jitsu athletes and the elderly, the pop-up events have helped continue to foster a feeling of community with gym goers and shoppers alike — and help business owners who are struggling to make ends meet or just getting started.
“When you have a bunch of talented people around you and you can access them, why not give them the opportunity to showcase their skills,” Schmitt said, noting the unique variety of vendors who will be selling at XXHOP. “It’s nice to give them the opportunity to start their own small business and be self-sufficient.”
The XX Functional Fitness XXHOP event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on May 2 at 1420 Freitas Park in Turlock. Schmitt said there is still available space for vendors who would like to participate in the pop-up shop, and those who are interested can contact him at 209-447-8885. Registration for the car show costs $10 and begins at 9 a.m.
