OAKLAND — A woman was killed in a crash on Interstate 580 early Saturday morning after her car veered off the roadway and flipped over, according to California Highway Patrol.

At around 6:20 a.m., a woman driving a silver Chevy Malibu was heading westbound on I-580 when she approached the northbound connecting ramp to Highway 13, Oakland Officer David Arias said Saturday.

Just before reaching the ramp, the driver made a sudden turn, forcing the car to cross the gore point separating the highways, Arias said. The speed of the turn caused the vehicle to flip over and travel off the road, landing among nearby trees.

Officers arrived a few minutes later and discovered the driver had suffered fatal injuries, Arias said. Investigators said she was not wearing a seatbelt, but it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The car did not appear to directly hit a tree.

The driver’s identity will be released upon her formal identity by the coroner’s office and notification of next of kin.
