For the second time in recent days, a car carrier caught fire late Thursday night on an area highway.

Palmer Township firefighters were called about 10 p.m. to a blaze on Route 33 North between the Main Street and Route 191 interchanges, Deputy Chief Jim Alercia said in a news release. There had been several reports from passersby in both directions of a burning truck, Alercia added.

Three vehicles on the transporter along the side of the highway were destroyed.

Both northbound lanes were closed for about four hours as additional water sources were needed to douse the fire, Alercia said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Northampton County emergency management personnel were requested due to about 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilling, Alercia said.

“No waterways or environmental issues were detected during the fire investigation,” Alercia said.

The deputy chief did not report any injuries in the incident.

The truck driver, who was on the way to Ohio, told investigators that the hauler struck something on the highway, which caused the undercarriage to catch fire, Alercia said.

Once the vehicles were removed from Route 33, the highway reopened by 2 a.m., Alercia said.
