About 30 people, including students and staff from a religious retreat, were hurt Sunday when a bus crashed off Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania State Police report.
The wreck happened at 2:36 p.m. when a 2017 Van Hool bus driven south by a 37-year-old Lancaster man, who was hurt in the crash, went through the right shoulder of the interstate near mile marker 111.7 in Frailey Township -- about 65 miles west of Allentown -- police from the Frackville barracks said.
The bus went over an exit ramp and across Route 25, hitting the center guide rail, police said. It then struck an embankment and went 50 yards into a wooded area, police said.
Those on the bus “sustained varying degrees of injuries” and were taken to area hospitals, police said. Five of those people were in critical condition, WFMZ reported. Some were flown, some went by ambulance and parents transported the rest, WNEP said.
Tremont fire Chief Brian Eisenacher told WNEP that “when something like this happens, it’s people shaking all around the bus. It takes some time to get in and get people out of the situation. The guys on the bus did a great job. We took out what we had to take out. Everybody was out and on their way to the hospital pretty quickly.”
The students and staff from LCBC Church in Lancaster County were returning from a student ministry fall retreat in Manheim, Pennsylvania, WNEP reported.
Lancasteronline reported that church Senior Pastor David Ashcraft wrote a letter that said, " Our staff are onsite and are still working to gather all the details, but there are injured passengers who have been taken to nearby hospitals .”
No other vehicles were involved, police said. Police did not immediately identify the driver.
As many as 100 first responders were on the scene, published reports said.
