BIG RAPIDS — The Big Rapids Department of Public Safety will be hosting a car seat clinic Saturday, Sept. 25.
From 9 a.m. to noon, certified car seat technicians with be available at the BRDPS fire bay, 435 N. Michigan Ave., for installs, questions, and general information.
According to a news release from BRDPS, car crashes are the leading cause of death among children. In 2018, 636 children under the age of 12 were killed in car crashes. Of those, 33% were unrestrained.
The clinic is part of Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 20-16, which culminates with National Seat Check Saturday. In Michigan, children must be buckled in a car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4-foot-9, whichever comes first.
Car seats fall into three types: rear-facing, front-facing and booster seat. The Michigan Department of Office and Highway Safety Planning recommends "all infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the seat’s manufacturer."
Michigan OHSP offers tips when choosing a car seat:
When buying or borrowing a car seat, avoid one that:
• Has been involved in a crash;
• Has been recalled;
• Has no date of manufacture and/or model number;
• Has expired (typically after six years); or
• Is damaged or missing parts
This includes car seats purchased at garage sales or second-hand stores since its history will be unknown.
According to OHSP, 70% of car seats are installed improperly. Some of the most common mistakes are:
• Harness straps are too loose;
• Car seat isn't snug enough to the vehicle, thus moves around too much;
• The car seat is the wrong size for the child's height and weight; and
• Chest clip is in the wrong position.
