Cold cars are nothing new in Massachusetts, with frosty windows and chilly seats a norm of the colder months — including early mornings that start with grabbing the ice scraper to clear the car of snow. But the way you’re warming up your car, might be putting your car at risk.

Boston Police Detective Amyleigh DeVito tweeted out a public service announcement to support car safety this winter season.

To avoid sitting in the cold, many Massachusetts residents turn on their car to warm it up and while the engine warms and the heat kicks on, they go inside to finish their morning routine. But DeVito warned this may be a problem, sending out a tweet warning people of the dangers of leaving your car running without supervision.

“I know it’s getting cold and your windows are frosty, but don’t start your car and leave it running,” she wrote. “We see a lot more car thefts starting this time of year! A few mins sitting in your car or a remote starter please.”
