2021 Toyota RAV4 HybridThis year has been a wildly unpredictable year for car shoppers. A worldwide shortage of microchips has left many popular models difficult to find. Prices have reached never-before-seen highs.

But some things remain constant. New car shoppers were once again most likely to consider Toyota, Ford, and Chevy products in the third quarter.

Kelley Blue Book’s quarterly Brand Watch report is a consumer perception survey that also weaves in consumer shopping behavior to determine how a brand or model stacks up with its segment competitors on a dozen factors key to consumers’ buying decisions. We publish separate reports for the luxury and non-luxury markets.

During the third quarter, the supply of unsold new vehicles fell below 1 million — a level not seen since the mid-1980s. But Toyota was once again the brand shoppers were most likely to consider. The Japanese brand has now led the study every quarter for more than three years.

Fully one-third of shoppers considered a Toyota between July and September. Ford products made 31% of shopping lists. Chevrolet came in third, at 24%. Hyundai cracked the top five for the first time since 2012.

SUVs Well Outpacing Cars and Trucks

More shoppers – 66% — considered an SUV than any other type of vehicle. Cars and trucks tied for second, with 32% of shoppers considering each. Minivans earned consideration from 4% of new car shoppers.

Different Brands Showed Different Strengths

New car shoppers preferred different brands based on what factor was most important to them in their new car. Shoppers most focused on reliability favored Honda. Those looking for safety above all else preferred Subaru. Shoppers focused on comfort most often considered Ram. Affordability drove shoppers to consider Mazda vehicles. And shoppers who rated performance as the most important attribute in a new car were most likely to consider a Dodge product.

The 10 Most-Considered Models:

  1. Ford F-150
  2. Honda CR-V
  3. Chevy Silverado
  4. Toyota RAV4
  5. Subaru Forester
  6. Subaru Outback
  7. Toyota Tacoma
  8. Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty
