CHICAGO (CBS) — A car was stolen with a baby inside near Marquette Park Monday afternoon, police said.

Police said the car was found more eight miles away hours later, but the baby was not there.

At 12:46 p.m., a 30-year-old woman got out of her vehicle and walked into a convenience store in the 2700 block of West 71st Street, police said.

The woman returned to find that her car had been stolen by a thief who drove off north on California Avenue, police said.

A 7-month-old baby boy was inside. Late Monday afternoon, police issued an endangered missing child alert for the baby, identified as Jaylen Mojica.

Police said the woman had left the silver Honda CR-V running.

A woman who witnessed to the carjacking said she heard the victim screaming as she realized her car and child were gone.

“I just heard a young lady hollering about somebody took her car with her baby in it, and it’s really scary that you can’t leave your car and somebody just jumps right in,” the witness said.

A car that was believed to have been the one that was stolen was dumped in an empty lot in the 1400 block of South Keeler Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood, more than nine miles away from the original scene.

The car has purple writing on that reads, “Help,” and, “More candy” — possibly for Halloween, CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reported. The car is registered to a home in downstate Peoria.

There was no word on where the infant was as of 5 p.m. Monday, and the carjacking suspect was apparently still on the run.

The empty lot on the West Side where the car was found is next to a small playground and a home, and there is an alley in the back. There are a few ways the suspect could have escaped at that scene.

The car was towed away before 5:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, police dogs were out at 61st Street and Fairfield Avenue, 10 blocks north of the original crime scene, looking for Jaylen. Police have also been searching for the boy in a number of other neighborhoods.

“Bring this baby home,” said Redd Power, who lives near the original scene. “This baby’s supposed to be with their mother. You don’t have no reason carjacking nobody.”

No AMBER Alert has been issued for Jaylen, but Chicago Police said they are working with federal law enforcement to find him.

Area One detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (312) 747-8380.
