PEMBROKE — Volunteer firefighters had to wade into chest-high water to rescue an Akron man whose car split in two and flew into Murder Creek late Sunday.

Genesee County sheriff’s deputies said Brent J. Graham, 32, of Sand Hill Road was driving west on Route 5 shortly after 10 p.m. when the car left the road on a curve just before Back Street.

The car, a 2004 Ford Mustang, went off the north side of the road, hitting a National Grid pole and a fire hydrant.

The car then went across Back Street, where it hit a guard rail, a stop sign and another utility pole.

The car overturned into Murder Creek, where it lay in two pieces when emergency crews arrived.

Pembroke Assistant Chief Jamie Waff said the car’s front section was upright, with the driver unconscious, belted in with water up to his chest.

Waff said it was decided to limit the number of firefighters entering the cold water and the initial plan was to tow the car from the water and then free the driver.

That was made impossible, however, by the power lines that were down, blocking a tow truck from running lines into the water.

Waff, two other volunteers and an off-duty sheriff’s deputy waded into the water and used hand tools to free Graham.

Graham was unconscious but breathing as he was pulled from the wreckage, placed on a backboard and hauled out.

Graham was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center.

City of Batavia’s water team was called to the scene because there was a fear that another person was in the car.

Waff said the car was hauled from the water and city crews searched beneath the wreckage for signs of another occupant.

No one was found and it is believed that no one else was in the car.

The crash also damaged a garage on Back Street. Waff said the car hit a fire hydrant, sending it flying into the garage and causing damage.

He said the owner had recently repaired the exact same spot on the garage that was damaged in a similar crash on Jan. 1.

Waff said it was the third time that he could recall where a car went off the curve at the same location and across Back Street and into or over the creek. The car on Jan. 1 flew across the creek and landed on the other side.
