Recycling worker hit by car on River Road dies - wtvr.com

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A recycling worker hit by a car Thursday afternoon in Chesterfield County has died, according to police.

Officers were called to the 9800 block of River Road around 2 p.m. after a car attempting to pass the recycling truck hit the worker.

Witnesses told WTVR CBS 6 Senior Reporter Wayne Covil that the recycling truck had stopped with two cars behind it when a Jeep tried to pass all three. At that same time, the worker stepped off the truck and was hit.

"Witnesses said his body was thrown several feet," Covil said. "Those witnesses were visibly shaken by what they saw."

The worker was medflighted to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to police.

Officials said the victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

"The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene," officers said.

There is no word yet about potential charges in the crash, but police said their investigation into the incident is ongoing.

River Road between Graves and Church roads remained closed at last check.
