BEREA, Ohio – Five boys – two 16, two 15 and one 13 – escaped OhioGuidestone, 202 East Bagley Road, at about 4:30 p.m. April 5 and stole a car on University Street as the car’s owner watched.
The boys escaped the behavioral health treatment center by kicking in door. They were seen walking on Eastland Road toward Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. An OhioGuidestone worker followed them on foot.
One of the boys agreed to return to the treatment center with the worker and police. The other four boys decided to steal a car from a University Street driveway in front of the victim, who had just pulled into her driveway. She had left the car running and was in her yard.
The victim saw the four boys carrying a lawn ornament they had grabbed from her yard. She told the boys to put down the lawn ornament, which they eventually did. Then they told her they were taking her car.
The woman begged the boys not to steal her car but they jumped inside and locked the doors. She asked them to at least give her a purse that was in the car, but they refused and drove way.
The victim had an account with OnStar, so police called the vehicle security company, which located the stolen car traveling on Interstate 480 in Brooklyn Heights. OnStar was able to slow down the vehicle and call police in the area the car was traveling.
Shortly afterward, Cleveland police called and said the stolen car was involved in a crash in that city. All four boys were taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. The woman’s purse and cell phone were still in the car.
