CHICOPEE – A driver crashed through the iron fence in the parking lot across from City Hall, leaving the car dangling over the bike path 20 feet below.

Firefighters were able to rescue the driver from the car using a step ladder and a backboard. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, said Fire Lt. Katie Collins Kalbaugh.

The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. in the Front Street parking lot which is mainly reserved for handicap parking and some visitors to City Hall. There is a drop-off past the fence and a retaining wall that runs along the bike path.

“They used special tools to stabilize the vehicle,” Collins Kalbaugh said. “A firefighter was able to climb up on a step ladder and get into the car to check on the victim.”

Firefighters then slid the driver onto a board and carried the victim to safety. The Chicopee Fire Department ambulance crew brought the driver to the hospital for treatment, she said.

“They did a great job getting the victim out,” she said. “We do a lot of training for situations like these and it really helped.”

Crews from Interstate Towing used a heavy-duty tow truck with a crane attachment to haul the vehicle back to the pavement, she said.
