STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Volunteers of the Where to Turn Clean Team worked together Saturday morning to clean up a Staten Island bus stop that made it on the “Sorriest Bus Stops 2021″ list.
The bus stop, located at Brielle Avenue/Babe Ruth Stadium, adjacent to the Verrazano Babe Ruth League, is along the route of the S54/S57 MTA bus.
Dennis McKeon, the executive director of Where to Turn, said on social media the clean-up was due to requests by residents.
Earlier in the week, the Advance/SILive.com reported the bus stop made Streetsblog’s March Madness brackets for the “Sorriest Bus Stops” in America. The site references the stop as the “Staten Island Murder Shed,” where it was ominous, has no sidewalk, and was found littered with trash and no garbage cans in sight.
The group of volunteers, including Dan Cavanaugh and Donna Doughtery Docci, painted over the graffiti and removed nearly 30 bags of trash.
McKeon said on social media that the stop “may not be the best in the city, but it is no longer the worst.”
The clean-up was part of a “Quality of Life” initiative sponsored by Councilmen Steven Matteo (R-Mid-Island) and Joe Borelli (R-South Shore).
“This is why our Clean Team is so important. To ensure we do everything we can to keep our wonderful borough clean,” said Matteo, a candidate for Staten Island borough president. “Thanks to our Clean Team, my staff, and volunteers, this bus stop is a whole lot cleaner, safer, and a little bit more inviting than it was before.”
