The Mitchell Board of Education will examine renewing its bus transportation services agreement at its next meeting.
The meeting will be held in a live format Monday at 5 p.m. at the Mitchell Career & Technical Education Academy Commons after several months of virtual meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Joe Graves, superintendent for the Mitchell School District, said in the agenda notes that the current 5-year contract with Foreman Sales & Service will expire at the end of the 2021-22 school year, and representatives with the company have approached the district about renewing the contract for another five years.
“They desire to do so because they have plans for improving their bus garage and offices on Norway and don’t want to make that investment if they will no longer be offering transportation services in Mitchell after June 30, 2022,” Graves said.
Graves noted several points for the board to consider. Among those points was that transportation services may be bid out, but school districts are not required to do so; however, the Mitchell School District has generally done so in the past.
Graves said the district has been well-served under the current contract with Foreman, with buses running on time and having a very low rate of equipment failure, and the buses themselves are quite new. He said Foreman personnel have been easy to work with.
Rates for the 2022-23 school year under the new contract would be $3.30 per mile on regular routes, $3.20 per mile for yellow activity, $58.71 per field trip, $3.36 per mile charter and $12.69 drive down time (over four hours). The contract also lists $2.60 per gallon in fuel cost as the benchmark.
