A crash late last night on Green Hill Road near Route 79 involving a Madison Police Department (MPD) cruiser resulted in an arrest and significant damage to nearby electrical infrastructure, as well as minor injuries to the officer involved, according to MPD Captain Joe Race.
At around 11:35 p.m on May 25, a car pulled out and “t-boned” the MPD cruiser, pushing it into a nearby telephone pole, according to Race. There was a passenger in the car, and the driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant, according to Race. Their identity is not being released at this time, he said.
The MPD officer was “treated and released,” Race said, but the crash was severe enough that airbags were deployed in the police car. The status of the cruiser is still being assessed, but it sustained “severe damage,” according to Race and is likely totaled.
Damage to the nearby electrical infrastructure will likely take at least the rest of the day to repair, and the roads might be closed through tomorrow, he added.
“That telephone pole holds wires going two ways- east and west and north and south,” he said. “Eversource has a tremendous amount of work to stabilize that pole and get it replaced. They did tell us this is going to be substantial.”
On Facebook, Madison Public Schools warned Wednesday morning that buses would “make their best effort” to pick up students in the affected areas, but they were “limited” by the closure.
“If possible please transport your child using an alternate route,” the schools wrote Wednesday morning.
