LEWIS COUNTY, MO. (WGEM) -- The bus ride to school for most is overpowered by the noise, but this morning on the electric bus in Lewis County, the ride was the complete opposite.
“It was silent the who way through which is not something bus 18 has ever been before," said Ava Scifres a freshman at Highland high school.
Lewis County C-1 follows Knox County and is now the second district in the state of Missouri to get an electric bus from Lion Electric.
Superintendent John French said this electric bus will be beneficial for the district.
“It’s going to be extremely cheaper to run on a per-mile basis. You know the regular maintenance that has to be done on a traditional school bus there’s you know, not a transmission you’re not changing transmission fluid. There’s not oil and filters you're having to change every so many mile. So, there’s a huge amount of savings.
Lesley Edmonston has been driving buses since 1989 he said the quite bus makes driving a lot easier.
“I’m hard of hearing anyway. So it’s definitely a good advantage for me cause I can hear things going on in the back that you normally wouldn’t hear.”
A Northeast Missouri school district making history.
An electric bus costs between 350,000-400,000 dollars. Lewis County C-1 will only pay $100,000 for the bus because of contributions from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Volkswagen Trust Fund, and Rural Development Grants.
