A Texas man was arrested after he allegedly bought a Dodge Durango using someone else’s identity in Deerfield and then called 911 to falsely report the vehicle had been stolen.
Dustin S. Fell, 35, of the 200 block of Firefield Road in New Braunfels, Texas, was charged with theft between $10,000 and $100,000, false alarm or complaint to 911, obstructing identification and resisting a peace officer.
A criminal complaint filed in Lake County Circuit Court alleges that Fell called 911 around 2 a.m. April 21.
He called with the purpose of making a false report when he reported his vehicle stolen under a false name, according to the complaint.
Officers with the Deerfield Police Department responded to investigate the call, which originated at the Residence Inn by Marriott at 530 Lake Cook Road.
Officers asked Fell for his name and he gave them a false name, the complaint said.
Fell was transported to the Deerfield Police Department and asked to provide fingerprints for further identification purposes, but he responded “F–k you, you can only hold me for 30 days,” the complaint said.
Officers learned through their investigation that the name Fell initially provided them with was actually the name of an identity theft victim.
The complaint further said that Fell obtained unauthorized control of a grey 2020 Dodge Durango, which was purchased using the victim’s identity.
Surveillance video captured Fell driving the Dodge in the drive-thru of a nearby McDonald’s. It is unclear why Fell called the police to report the vehicle stolen.
Fell remains held in the Lake County Jail after a judge ordered him held on a $150,000 bond, meaning he would need to post $15,000 cash in order to be released.
A bond review is scheduled for May 5, court records show.
