Nine unions representing NJ Transit bus drivers, mechanics and other workers have reached a preliminary agreement on a new contract with the agency.
Officials for NJ Transit and the Amalgamated Transit Union confirmed the tentative agreement, but said work still remains to be done before it goes to union members for a vote and to the agency’s board of directors.
“While a preliminary agreement has been reached, we are early in the process,” said Nancy Snyder, an NJ Transit spokeswoman. “At this time, language is being developed and finalized for a tentative agreement.”
Amalgamated Transit Union state chairman Ray Greaves, and Orlando Riley, ATU New Jersey State Council general chairman, announced the tentative pact in separate Facebook posts this weekend. Greaves could not be reached for additional comment. Riley declined to comment until the pact had been signed.
“Details will be available as soon as we receive the signed tentative agreement, which should take place sometime next week,” Greaves said in the post to union members. He also congratulated the negotiating committees of the nine ATU bus union locals and Riley for “getting the bus over the finish line.”
The final contract requires approval by the ATU membership and NJ Transit. If approved, it would replace previous agreements reached in the fall of 2015.
“Once a tentative agreement is reached, that agreement would require ratification by the union membership and NJ Transit’s Board of Directors,” Snyder said.
Negotiations with rail unions are ongoing, with two of the agency’s 15 rail unions requesting assistance from a federal mediator in talks to reach new contracts after the old ones expired in 2019.
