Audi will replace its signature midsize A6 sedan with an electric vehicle in late 2023, according to media reports. If true, that would mean the 2022 Audi A6 would be the last gasoline-powered version of the executive sedan. We’ve reached out to Audi for official comment and will update if we hear back.
What is known is that, like many automakers, Audi has pledged to go all-electric. But Audi’s plans are more aggressive than those of most rivals. The company announced in March that it had designed its last internal combustion engine. Just two months later, a Reuters report (still not confirmed by Audi spokespeople) said the company planned to have a 100% electric lineup by the end of 2026.
The current A6 is a handsome car with exceptional materials and build quality, but uses an all-wheel-drive system biased toward the front, which makes it a bit less athletic than the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It retails for $54,900, plus a $1,045 destination fee.
Already Seen as Concept Car
But its electric replacement has been sitting in plain sight since April’s Shanghai Auto Show. Audi rolled out the A6 e-tron Concept in Shanghai, officially calling it a concept car. But anyone who looked at it knew it was close to production-ready. The concept rides on the new Premium Electric Platform, designed in partnership between Audi and Porsche. It uses two electric motors, one per axle, to create an all-wheel-drive system and 469 horsepower.
Audi claims a 435-mile range for the A6 e-tron, but that figure is untested. It’s likely based on European modeling that tends to predict much higher ranges than the EPA. Price is unknown, but EVs tend to cost several thousand dollars more than their gas equivalents.
We expect to see the production version unveiled next year.
Audi Going Electric Fast
Several other automakers have set public goals to have all-electric lineups, including Volvo and Mini. Others have announced plans to get close to an all-electric stable, though perhaps not 100%. These include GM and Porsche.
But no automaker has approached Audi’s reported 5-year timetable for the change.
The German automaker is well on its way. Its current electric offerings include the e-tron SUV and e-tron Sportback, both well-received by critics. The new e-tron GT is a six-figure high-performance car that shares much of its bones with the Porsche Taycan. The upcoming Q4 e-tron SUV, which could reach showrooms early next year, could start for under $45,000.
