Car Thefts at Honolulu Airport Parking Lot Double in 1 Month - Hawaiipublicradio

rintihoh.blogspot.com

The number of vehicle thefts at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport parking lot this month has doubled since June.

Last month there were seven thefts. As of July 21, there have been 13 vehicle thefts. All of the thefts but one were associated with car sharing or person-to-person rental.

Airport security workers have increased their patrols. They noticed many cars with their doors unlocked, windows rolled down, and spare keys left in the vehicle.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Airport Division recommends the following steps to keep your car safe:

  1. Remove your extra key. Car thieves know where extra keys are commonly kept, making it easier for them to steal a vehicle.
  2. Remove your parking ticket and other valuables. If someone steals your vehicle, they will need a parking ticket to exit the airport. Leaving valuables in the car makes it a tempting target.
  3. Arrive early for your flight. Give yourself time to make sure your car is secure.

If you witness suspicious activity at Honolulu Airport, call the Airport Unit 24-hour dispatch at (808) 836-6606.
