400 vintage cars form a parade to thank hospital workers - Democrat & Chronicle

rintihoh.blogspot.com

Some 400 vehicles, many of them vintage, did a wonderful drive-by last Saturday, circling Rochester-area hospitals in a salute to all of the workers there who are doing so much in this terrible time.

Mary Moon of Fairport sent me a series of pictures from the event. She rode with her husband, Brian, in their 1965 Plymouth Fury III, Brian’s first car, the one he couldn’t give up.

The images serve as a reminder of how people are going out of their way these days to express gratitude. There are messages on sidewalks, signs on lawns, posts on Facebook, cards and letters — all of which can be boiled down to two words: Thank you.

The CCCC — COVID-19 Classic Car Cruise — was organized by B&C Auto Restoration and Paint of Ontario, Wayne County. The call for participation went out on social media to area car and motorcycle clubs.

Drivers gathered at the Medley Center and formed a caravan that circled Rochester General Hospital, St. Ann’s Home and care center, and then Highland, Strong and Unity hospitals. They were escorted by hospital security and by police motorcycles. Workers at each facility came out to see the parade. And they applauded and cheered the drivers, returning the favor.

“It was very moving to see the staff at these locations enjoying the tribute to them,” wrote Mary Moon, who’s a maintenance technician at the medical and office buildings at Linden Oaks Office Park in Penfield. Her husband is a maintenance technician at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care in Penfield.

“Brian and I are both essential workers ourselves,” Mary continued, “so we can appreciate how much gestures like this mean to us, no matter how big or small. It lifted our spirits to participate.”

Bird update

In response to Thursday’s column on the return of rose-breasted grosbeaks to our bird feeder, a few people wrote that they have also welcomed Baltimore orioles.

Those birds haven’t shown up at our place, and my wife, Cindy Schmitt, and I have a serious case of oriole envy.

People with orioles at their places report that they have lured the birds by placing orange slices or grape jam (or both) on or near the feeder.

We’ve tried orange slices, but the orioles haven’t taken the bait. It would seem that we need a touch of the grape. We’ll try, but I feel we’ve been judged and found wanting by the orioles. It hurts.

More from Jim's series: Birds are back, the ban is lifted and we shut-ins can't stop watching

A thank you note to, good grief, Spectrum

Too much crosswording during the shutdown may be leading to brain fatigue
