Burlington elementary school celebrates students with car parade - Burlington Free Press

Burlington has hit summer-like high temperatures the last couple days, but that wasn't going to stop teachers at Flynn Elementary School from celebrating.

"We're a strong, Flynn-tastic community," said Lashawn Whitmore-Sells, principal at Flynn, who with several dozen teachers and staff organized at the school a car parade Wednesday afternoon to celebrate their students.

"They felt that they wanted to give back to the community," Whitmore-Sells said. "It's as hard for us as it is for [the students] to not see them."

Since Vermont schools closed for in-person instruction in late March, teachers at Flynn had been brainstorming ways to show their appreciation to their students and their families as they continued to learn at home.

For some staff members, the lack of face-to-face interactions and conversations with students and their colleagues was taking its toll.

"It's been tough," said Amanda Schauwecker, a guidance counselor at Flynn, who is adjusted to hopping on to classroom Zoom meetings to continue supporting students.

Schauwecker was initially concerned for the graduating fifth graders and retiring teachers, who would miss out on the in-person traditions they have done in the past to celebrate the end of the school year.

But once teachers at Flynn got to see other local school districts celebrate their students, they quickly planned their own parade. Wednesday's celebration got together 50 staff and teachers to cruise together in their cars throughout the neighborhoods adjacent to the school, greeting honks and waves from students and local residents.

To wrap up the academic year and see fifth graders off, Flynn Elementary School will host a bridging ceremony on June 11.

The event will allow students and their families to come in cars and do a drive around of the school as their teachers and staff congratulate them and award them with certificates and gifts.

"It'll be a chance to wave them goodbye for the summer," Whitmore-Sells said.
