OTTAWA COUNTY, MI — An 11-year-old Ohio girl was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car while crossing Ottawa Beach Road in a marked crosswalk Saturday.
The girl was among several people crossing the road when the crash occurred, according to a news release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash took place at about 5:41 p.m. July 11 near the intersection of Ottawa Beach Road and First Street.
Westbound traffic had stopped for the pedestrians to cross, the release states. Once the pedestrians reached the middle of the road, the 11-year-old continued to cross and walked into the path of an eastbound vehicle.
The vehicle was driven by a 44-year-old Illinois man, according to deputies. The man stated he did no see the girl until the last minute due to traffic backups on both sides of the crosswalk, the release states.
Traffic in the area was backed up due to high volumes of cars trying to get into Holland State Park, according to the release.
This crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
