School Bus Carrying Children From Summer Camp Crashes In Reading - CBS Boston

READING (CBS) – A school bus carrying children from a summer camp collided with a car in Reading Friday afternoon. The crash happened near Wakefield and Charles streets at about 4:00 p.m.

Two children on the bus and the driver of the car were hurt in the crash. The children were treated at the scene and released to their parents.

The collision was so loud it woke a sleeping neighbor. “I heard a loud crash and I got up and I saw the bus and I called 911,” a neighbor said.

“I was like oh my God there’s a bus on the lawn,” another neighbor said. “I see smoke coming out from the engine.”

The school bus was leaving Camp Rice Moody and there were 18 children on the bus at the time of the crash. The parents of the children arrived panicked.

“The parents looked really scared,” a neighbor said. “I was horrified for them. I can’t even imagine what they felt like.”

While police and firefighters tried to calm the kids, those first responders were touched by the kindness of Reading neighbors.

“We also wanted to thank the local residents that came out and saw the children upset and brought out snacks, juice boxes and water for the kids,” said Reading Police Chief David Clark.

“Everybody takes care of each other. We all work very well together. It was really nice to see them jump out here and help,” said Reading Police Deputy Chief Christine Amendola.

The woman driving the other car was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.

“It’s a horrible situation but it could have been a lot worse,” Clark said. “Things went unbelievably smooth.”

State and Reading police are working together investigating the crash. It’s unclear what caused the bus and car to collide.
