Motorists, be cautious: School buses are back - What's New LaPorte?

rintihoh.blogspot.com

State Rep. Jim Pressel, R-Rolling Prairie, reminds us that as many students head back to school, buses will once again be a common sight on our roads.

Hoosier motorists should give themselves extra time to get to their destinations and be patient as children enter and exit school buses. Indiana law requires drivers to stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. Failure to do so can result in a traffic ticket and your driver’s license being suspended.

For divided roadways with a median, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop. Follow these tips from the Indiana Department of Transportation: INDOT: School Bus Safety

Motorists should also expect increased pedestrian traffic near school bus stops during the academic year and drive with caution. Students need to do their part and be mindful of their surroundings and ready when the bus arrives each morning. Indiana State Police have these school bus safety tips for children: ISP: School Bus Safety for Kids (in.gov)

Let’s have a safe school year by remembering to watch for and be cautious around school buses.
