MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio

Criminal damage: Hyde Park Drive

Police went to an area at 2:25 a.m. Oct. 11 regarding an earlier call involving damage to a car. The officer met with the car’s owner and girlfriend. The victim said the only person who had reason to damage his car was his girlfriend’s former boyfriend. The victim said he saw the ex-boyfriend when he looked outside his girlfriend’s window. He believed the ex-boyfriend saw the two in bed together. The first call about the damage was at 1 p.m. The ex’s truck closely matched the description of one that a witness gave police. The witness said he believed the man broke the windows with a baseball bat. Police found the truck in question nearby. The girlfriend showed police a social media post on her ex’s page saying “crazy” things happened and he caught her “cheating” on him. The ex could not be found.

All the car’s windows were broken by some type of instrument. The victim said he would press charges if the perpetrator is found.

Criminal damage: Bagley Road

Police went to Midpark Village Apartments at 5:24 a.m. Sept. 22 for a car broken into overnight. The victim said she went to the garage at 5:30 a.m. and noticed her passenger side window was broken out on her car. She said nothing was taken. The victim told police she locks her garage door every night. The officer noted there were three other doors connected to her garage that were unlocked overnight. She said she would speak to management about that issue.

Driving under the influence: Bagley Road

An officer at 1:19 a.m. Sept. 18 noticed a car did not have a rear license plate. He stopped the car in the Red Roof Inn driveway and then saw a paper dealer tag attached to the car’s rear window. The driver gave the officer her Wisconsin license. The officer had a difficult time understanding the driver when she spoke. She showed signs of inebriation. She failed field sobriety tests and asked to stop trying to balance on one leg. She was arrested for driving under the influence. She told the officer she had a small amount of marijuana in her car. The officer found one clear plastic bag with suspected marijuana inside a coin purse. The driver’s chemical breath test at 2:26 a.m. came back as .000. The woman spoke to the officer and said she consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana earlier in the night at a party. She then became impaired from it. She said that impairment did not feel normal. She felt “stuck.” She tried to drink milk to sober up quickly while driving to a friend’s room at the Red Roof Inn to sleep. She was released at 4 a.m. to a friend.

Drug paraphernalia: Bagley Road

An officer checked a parked car’s registration at 11:56 a.m. Oct. 16 and learned its owner had an active felony warrant. The car then left the lot. The officer followed and verified the driver matched the owner’s description. He stopped the car in the Brew Garden parking lot. He arrested the driver, who was placed in the cruiser. The officer returned to the car and saw a metal scrubbing pad and clear glass pipe on the driver’s seat. The pipe had burnt marks on both ends, but one end was stuffed with pieces of the pad. The Sandusky County Sheriff’s office alerted police no one could pick up the man until the next day. He was issued a court summons and released at the scene.

Improperly handling firearms: Sheldon Road

An officer checked registration of a passing car at 8:39 p.m. Oct. 12 and found it belonged to another car. He stopped the car as it entered I-71. The motorist said he did not have a driver’s license. He said the car belonged to his uncle who was trying to get plates for it. The motorist said there was nothing illegal in the car. The officer learned the driver had a suspended license. As the officer returned to the car, he noticed a Glock sticker on it. The man said there was a handgun in the glove compartment. The officer removed the motorist who was then searched. His passenger also was removed from the car. The officer found the 9mm firearm in the glove compartment. It was not inside a case and accessible through the interior of the car. It was not in plain sight. The gun was not loaded and did not have an inserted magazine. The man said there was a magazine in the driver’s door compartment. Prior to a tow, another magazine was found in a bag in the back of the car. It was loaded with rounds. The bag also contained marijuana. The man, who did not have a concealed carry handgun license, was cited for improperly handing firearms in a car and traffic citations. The two were transported off the highway for their rides home.
