SPRINGFIELD, NJ - In a post on the township website, it was announced that senior citizen bus service within Springfield will resume as of Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, with changes designed to reduce the risk, exposure, and spread of COVID-19.
When it returns, the bus service will be available to Springfield residents ages 55+ on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, for rides within the township from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Among the changes recommended by the Bloomfield Health Department, which is contracted to provide services to Springfield, several COVID-19 modifications have been implemented, such as:
- New plexiglass driver shield
- Face mask requirement
- Driver and rider temperature checks
- Daily sanitization of the bus
- Reduced passenger capacity
- physical seat distancing
- Availability of hand sanitizer
The senior citizen bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift. Other riders should be able to board and depart the bus via the entry stairs, either independently or with an aide. The driver cannot carry packages.
Senior citizens in Springfield are encouraged by the township to use the bus service for trips to grocery stores and pharmacies, doctors and physical therapists, banks, the Chisholm Community Center, town hall, the library, the post office, and other local destinations.
Bus service from the department is not available on weekends, Tuesdays, Thursdays, or municipal holidays, or due to extreme weather conditions or maintenance issues.
To make a reservation at least one day prior to your ride, contact Ricci Rajoppi, Recreation Program Coordinator, or any member of the Recreation Department staff, at (973) 912-2227, on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 am-4:00 pm. You may also leave a voicemail during non-business hours.
